The 12 C / 13 C - ratio in cool carbon stars ?

چکیده

We present observations of circumstellar millimetrewave 13CO line emission towards a sample of 20 cool carbon stars. Using a detailed radiative transfer model we estimate the circumstellar 12CO/13CO-ratios, which we believe accurately measure the important stellar 12C/13C-ratios. For those optically bright carbon stars where it is possible, our derived 12C/13Cratios are compared with the photospheric results, obtained with different methods. Our estimates agree well with those of Lambert et al. (1986). It is shown that a straightforward determination of the 12CO/13CO-ratio from observed line intensity ratios is often hampered by optical depth effects, and that a detailed radiative transfer analysis is needed in order to determine reliable isotope ratios.

Carbon , nitrogen , oxygen and lithium abundances of six cool supergiants in the SMC ?

Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen abundances were derived from high-resolution spectra of 6 cool supergiants of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Oxygen-to-iron ratios (mean value [O/Fe] ≈–0.18 dex) are found to be similar to those found in young objects in the LMC and the Galaxy. This result is discussed in terms of chemical evolution. A mean deficiency of the carbon-to-iron ratio of [C/Fe] ≈–0.3 dex and ...

High mass - loss carbon stars and the evolution of the local 12 C / 13 C ratio

The 12 C/ 13 C ratio has been measured in a sample of 10 carbon stars with high mass-loss rates, of ≥ 10 −5 M yr −1. This sample is complete for northern hemisphere carbon stars within ∼ 1 kpc of the Sun. Using the J=2–1 rotational lines of CO and 13 CO, the intensity ratio of 12 CO/ 13 CO is found to be 17 ± 11 for the sample, and the deduced 12 C/ 13 C abundance ratio, after corrections for C...

Interstellar 12 C / 13 C ratios through CH + λλ 3957 , 4232 absorption in local clouds : incomplete mixing in the ISM ⋆

The 12 C/ 13 C isotope ratio is a tracer of stellar yields and the efficiency of mixing in the ISM. 12 CH + / 13 CH + is not affected by interstellar chemistry, and is the most secure way of measuring 12 C/ 13 C in the diffuse ISM. R = 12 C/ 13 C is 90 in the solar system. Previous measurements of 12 CH + λλ3957.7,4232.3 and 13 CH + λλ3958.2,4232.0 absorption toward nearby stars indicate some v...

CS 22957 - 027 : a carbon - rich extremely - metal - poor star ?

We present a high-resolution spectroscopic analysis of the extremely-metal-poor star CS 22957-027, which Beers et al. (1992) noted to exhibit a rather strong G-band. For T eff = 4839 K, derived from broadband photometry, our analysis obtains log g= 2.25, and a very low metallicity of [Fe/H]=−3.43 ± 0.12. The carbon-to-iron ratio is found to be enhanced by ≈ 2 dex relative to the solar value, si...

The Surface Distribution of Carbon Stars in the Galaxy

The results on the deep low dispersion (1250 A/mm at H , 30 < l < 165 , 195 < l < 210 , jbj < 5 ; 7000 A/mm at A band, 50 < l < 115 , b=0 , b=3.5) spectral surveys of the MILKY WAY are presented. More than 2250 carbon stars were identiied among them 1440 new ones. The C/M5 + ratio increases from 0.02 to 0.3 when longitude varies from 30 to 210. On the basis of A GENERAL CATALOG OF GALACTIC COOL...
